Yes, the forum is dead — or a lumbering zombie at best.
It isn’t just cplusplus.com. The C++ forum at SO doesn’t seem to get as much traffic as it did just a year ago (in my subjective observation), and a lot of other C and C++ -flavored forums that used to litter the internet have dried up.
I think it’s pretty amazing that Twicker hasn’t taken it down yet. I’d imagine he’s paying more for the forum now than the ad revenue brings him.
I'd imagine there'd be much more traffic if the site's login stuff wasn't broken.
Coding/programming jobs aren't hiring very well right now, so I imagine there's been less people going into the field perhaps.
Though, the biggest reason traffic has slowed, has to be AI.
I can't imagine having started my account all those years ago to ask questions if I had these powerful AIs back then. Would never have needed to ask anything in this forum.
The AI also doesn't get mad when someone just wants the answers to their homework..
I remember having this engineering/physics question I asked in the popular overflow/exchange forum. I got some mixed answers and didn't know how to even apply one of the formulas.
I had a math problem I asked in the math exchange whatever forum - but no one could actually give me a solved formula.
I eventually solved both things myself. In testing, a couple of these powerful AIs (GPT5 thinking is insanely intelligent) could now solve both problems in minutes - even though it took me much much longer..
Forums are a place where humans gather to share their knowledge. However, AI is the ultimate database of human knowledge - given as if from a professional at your disposal.
As a temporary workaround you can hold down Ctrl while pressing the "log in" button. That'll give access to the login form. The "0" page will open in another tab which you can just close or ignore.

It has been low for a long time, way before the AI craze started. Competition sure has had a big effect on forums like these but I think the biggest problem has been that new people can't sign up. Beginners have always been the driving force on website like this but the last few years we have just been discussing among us oldies that already have accounts.
Suspicion confirmed, I tested creating a new account, using both the Beta and Legacy sites. Over 30 minutes later still no confirmation email at either of the email addys.
Yes, people can't sign up sadly. Definitely the #1 reason this particular site has lowered traffic.
Though forums in general likely have a huge reduction in traffic due to AI. I've been on many forums over the years, and I can't imagine going to one anymore with questions..

The biggest reason we have an average post rate of 0.1 posts per day is because registration is broken! Yes, other things might have contributed to ebbs and flows, but it would still be a magnitude greater if twicker allowed site registration.
Edit: Sorry, you already said that. It's just frustrating so I wanted to repeat it.
"He's dead, jim."
Yea, I agree that THIS site's main issue is registration being broken.
Though, I can't imagine what I'd need to ask in a C++ forum that I couldn't Google or ask an AI about faster. Forums will end up being more about community rather than actual problem solving.
Of course, incredibly complex topics that an AI may struggle with would still appear in forums. As well as forums that deal with physical engineering could better benefit from real hands-on experience over an AI for some problems.
