[WIBNI] Restrict the editing of posts...

Pages: 123
I now think that the last post written before someone else posts should be stored, and the others... maybe not? If twicker (why are we bolding his name?) has enough storage, then Duoas' solution is a better one, and if not... well... let's compromise.

EDIT: Small typo fixed.

why not just make it so that you can only edit your most recent post?

Because a typo or error in that post might be found after you post your next post. It happened to me more than once.

fair point
why are we bolding his name?

Because he's cool.

I don't think there's anything we can do about it, really.

EDIT: unless we get moderators who can restore posts to what they were before an edit.

Or we can propose to twicker that he change a few things around here, as Grey Wolf suggested. If enough of us suggest the same thing, I'm sure he'll listen.

But that's impossible without saving the previous state, which brings us back to
A lot of wikis save all past versions of a page, and allow you to peruse them. This makes it easier for wiki editors to fix grafitti and errors and the like. In our case, it would be nice to see what was originally posted.

I don't know [if] twicker keeps the storage space to do that though...

I bold everyone's name... :-)

twicker will listen when changes are proposed, but he has a pretty good idea of what he wants here, which is one of the reasons that this forum works so well. IMHO.
I still say if anything is going to be fixed/changed on these forums, it should be the "remember me" box for the login.

I still have to log in like 2 or 3 times a day.
Ooooh...

I'm going to kill you. Stop this nonsense.

Hahaha.
Chrisname... you didn't exactly specify whose hitlist was getting pushed back.

Back on topic, it would be neat if that button was fixed. It's especially crazy when I enter the forum logged in, choose a sub-forum to find myself logged out, and then choose a thread in which I am logged back in (though that last one happens only rarely).

I occasionally get the log out thing, but if I just refresh the page it usually logs me back in fine.

I have the same as firedraco, it usually is not a problem. On occasion it has happened when I am writing a reply and get distracted, leaving the post for a while, when I click submit, I get a screen telling me to log in and I usually end up loosing the edit.

Edit:
What would be nice is not to have to log in when I change location/computer.

I only experience the problem when opening multiple threads in multiple tabs (firefox)... As long as I visit the page once in a while it keeps me logged in ( I think its around a day or something like it... gotta look in the cookie - if it sets one)...

I do both of these things: I log in at work, and at home. And I open half a dozen tabs when I'm logged in.

Maybe that's why I seem to have this problem all the time.
Hi!

I have encountered the problem pointed out by Grey Wolf maybe a couple dozen times in the past couple of years in these forums: A user posts a question, and once solved, he deletes the content. It even happened once that some disgruntled user with tens of posts removed the content of all his posts.

It's true that seldom happens, but when it happens it is something really annoying - it makes you feel like everyone who responded wasted his/her time. Still, I think that being able to edit your own posts can be a very useful thing.

I think the solution proposed by Duoas could work: store previous versions of edited posts (somewhere in the cloud), and be able to restore them to an earlier point if necessary.

What do you think?

I've received some complains about the "remember me" box before, but never been able to replicate them. So there is probably something going on there. I'll play with it in circumstances similar to Disch's to see if I can find what's the matter.

The reason I BUMPed this thread was because the other day it happen twice, once while I was actually writing a response the OP had been in and deleted the original post. This kind of selfish behavior is something that really does anger me, if I notice the same user doing this a number of times, they soon make it on to my mental black list of people not to bother with.

I'm in favor of anything that can keep/restore the usefulness of threads for future users.

Re: 'remember me' issue.
Just to clarify, I have two issues with the 'remember me' button (I don't consider them to be major issues).
The first is that you have to log in each time you change location/computer, the second seems to be some sort of time-out issue when I don't interact with the site for some time.

With the second one, it looks like when you come back to the forums, it fresh or enter a forum the get it displayed as if you are not logged it, if you then hit refresh again or change to another forum you are back to having the logged in view.

I think that it maybe that you are still logged it be given the wrong 'view', because on occasions I have left the forum in the main forum view and when I return I enter, say, the beginner forum to see new posts. I get a view of this forum as if I was not logged in. If I then go back to the main view, I get the view as if I was logged in but the beginners forum shows no new posts, even if there are new posts in it. So it has kept track of you entering and leaving the forum as if logged in, but shows the forum as a logged out view.

Hope that makes sense (and is helpful).
