Moderators

Okay, this idea was presented ages back, but still.

Twicker most likely needs help with these forums; they're getting much larger, and one admin is certainly not enough. How about taking the most trusted members of the site and making them moderators, so that the load is decreased from his back?
I agree. Now, having over 2000 posts, I believe I am an upstanding member of the community and that I therefore should, nay, must be chosen as a moderator chief moderator.

Never mind moderators, an occasional post/interjection from "Admin" may go a long way.
Our admin may seem to be overloaded (*not* a programming reference (reference was not a programming reference either)) and he could well be, but I've found that his reactions are swift, appropriate and well-placed. The community is quite good at keeping people in line; anybody who's stupid enough to be a belligerent idiot receives a good dose of justice. (As I have found, at least.) Why don't we try and get the opinion from the man himself?
If we are going to decide on mods I am counting myself out; I get ticked off at stupid people too easily. (I once got so annoyed that my hands were trembling. I could hardly type.) Who are some of the most respectable people on the forums to consider?

If you didn't guess, my last post was sarcastic. Actually, I don't want to be a moderator. Like tummychow, I don't think I'd be very good at it... I have a tendency not to try and restrict myself when someone annoys me, so I vent my real feelings as opposed to being "sensetive" and "understanding."

I hate the people who pretend to be sensitive and understanding. Better to speak your mind, no matter what's on it.
I think it would be nice to have other moderators, but I don't think twicker is having too many problems. Most of the posts that I've flagged are gone the next day.
If anything I think it's a nice little community we got going on here.

People tend to avoid rules when nobody enforces them. As long as we have someone that shows they enforce them, we should be okay.
It's just that our admin doesn't have too much community presence. A good old fashioned chastising every here and there would remind people that somebody *is* watching before they decide to break more rules. But things are pretty good as they are, I'd say.
Our existing structure works fine. Those who do cause excessive problems do get 'chastised' -- just not publicly.

I don't think there is ever any need for any "good old fashioned chastising"s. All that does is raise contention in the forums and frighten lurkers away.

Forum users occasionally lose their cool and write things they ought not. I've done that.
Moderators, by definition, should not ever. It requires a cool head.

There are forums I just won't attend because the moderators are big bullys. Who needs that?

I also think that if twicker ever needed or wanted this kind of help, he would make it known in his own way and time.

My $0.02.
Doesn't the Report button make all users moderators?
Thanks, Duoas.

I didn't think about it before, but this is true. Lots of moderators abuse their power...

I suppose you're right.
i aggree with duoas... but i would at least suggest to force the new users to read how to post and bave in this forum...

all those people not using code-tags are disturbing...

it would be very easy to force them to stay at least 30sec up to 1 minute on those topics... or make the rest of the forum inaccessible for those who does not...
I was thinking about Incubbus's suggestion earlier and it really seemed like a good idea. A user no longer has an excuse for idiotic posts.
You all have never been to Daniweb, have you?

One of the most important things you can learn when designing user interfaces is:

People don't read anything.
That's a general rule for any product, really. The most common calls to help desks involve questions that are answered in the manual, and that applies to software, hardware, and electrical appliances.
I have an account there... I don't like it much, though; it's too flashy and the site takes a long time to load. I just use the assembly forum there.

I think I may have said this before here, I would be nice to have a indicator to show that a thread has been reported. You could have some sort of abuse level indicator that gives an indication of how the community is feeling about the post and if it reaches a certain level the thread gets locked until the Admin can look into it.

I think we do a good job of moderating ourselves but I still think an occasional word from the Admin is still needed. I'm not talking public chastising of individuals, just a friendly reminder to be civil, or a word to say the situation is being dealt with.

this contains the possibility to everyone registering to the forum to push every random topic onto the "banlist" at random...
