Making Email Servers?

If I wanted to learn about how to create an email server from scratch using C++ where would I go online. I am probably in way over my head but I figured I would give it a try anyway and see how things go.

If you wanted to make a server you could probably do it pretty easy with a library like ENet. http://enet.bespin.org/

But are there any well made online resources that explain the concepts and such things, I figure the only part I really need help with in regards to the code is the initial walk around the block to get comfortable with what is going on and understand it. An online tutorial or some such resource like that is all I am looking for.
