trouble understanding getText()

If someone wouldn't mind, I need to VERY simple examples of:

getText() getting data from a CMD
getText() getting data from a .txt file

I'm just trying to learn how to get text from various programs/File/word.docs

All examples I read are beyond confusing.

How do I simply get text?
