system() command in windows API

Is there any windows api equivalent to the system() command? Googling 'windows' and 'system' summons up virtually every webpage ever made, so pretty hard to find related info.

system() might be a crutch, but for now it is a really speedy one. I just wish I could make it invisible to the user and not have that black window flash onscreen.
