Microsoft Speech SDK (SAPI 5.1)

I am trying to create a speech to text program using the Microsoft Speech SDK but the documentation is difficult to understand (and the examples won't compile correctly in Microsoft Visual C++ Express Edition 2008). Does anyone know of any good tutorials or a better SDK?
