Visual C++ trouble

Where can I get Visual C++ that works?

I downloaded the Visual C++ 2008 Express Edition upon installation it downloaded another 174mb, but it was unable to install.

Any ideas where I get Visual C++ either 2005 or 2008(freeware obviously)?
