Petzold's programming Windows 5th edition is the best starting point for windows, but I don't think it was ever published in PDF. You can usually find a paper copy on amazon or ebay for a reasonable price.

There is a digital copy available, but it's not in a format that a kindle or nook could read.

There is a PDF available but I am not posting it due to maybe it being copyright infringement or other Copyright laws being breached.
