Starting a process at a user defined workspace

I want to be able to automatically start an application in any workspace the user specifies.

Is there a way to access the workspace switcher programmatically?

User wants to start a process from one workspace which will be invoked in another workspace instead of the current one.

I want the same either using C++ or using shell script as well.

I am using RedHat Linux 2.4.20-8smp and RedHat Linux 2.6.9-22.EL.
