Edit: oops, I think I downloaded SFML 1.5 manually after all and installed it using "make install". I must have, because the version in the Ubuntu Karmic repos is 1.4.

Correction: The latest stable version is 1.6. They have also released unstable SVN snapshots labeled 1.7 and 2.0.
