vmware tools

This question is in regard to a Linux guest Ubuntu installation with a VMware player.

Can the VMTools be accessed by me for "use" or do they quietly work in the background? I have confirmed they were installed but not that they are in working order. I've turned my Ubuntu upsided own looking for it and have come to the conclusion I just need more information. I also tried viewing a services list to see if the vmware tools were in play, but got an error with that one.

All they do is enable guest autofit (e.g. when you resize the hypervisor's window, the guest changes resolution automatically), enable shared forlders (irrelevant if you use network shared), and somewhat increase graphical performance.

For development purposes they're mostly irrelevant. I often don't even bother with them.
