Logging into Ubuntu with just command line?

Jul 4, 2012 at 2:16am
So, is it possible to log into Ubuntu with just a command line? I really don't want the whole GUI as I'm running a VM right now, but I don't see anywhere to log in using just the command line.

Try ctrl + alt + an F key

Ah didn't work while logged in or at the log in screen.

After some research, I guess I'd have to go in and uninstall the gui. I guess I can just use the terminal, and cut down the RAM it gets.

Odd, works for me with Kubuntu in VirtualBox. If you wat to always boot into terminal see the answer here http://askubuntu.com/questions/157014/how-do-i-start-xterm-with-a-headless-system

Edit: F1 - F6 work for me with F7 going back to the VT running KDE.

Ah cool thanks! Guess I'll look into this.

I would like to be able to switch back and forth with just a reboot without having to change configurations each time. Guess I'll investigate if that's possible
