Apparently "restore factory settings" buttons...
... aren't meant to restore factory settings. Their main function appears to be to shoot down grub and don't restore any settings at all.

Normally, you use the recovery disk, which is either supplied at purchase, or (and recently more common) made the first time you boot your laptop.

Well, there was a program coming with it that had the option to either create a recovery disk, or just straight out restore factory settings. I was like "hey! no pointless disc jockeying!" and that happened.
Fortunately the recovery disc worked.
