Reporting Posts

How does reporting posts around here work? Does it go through a moderator?

Reason I ask is that there's been a couple of spam post I've reported in the past and they've disappeared instantly. Yet I often see posts that have a 'reported' flag at the bottom right corner.
I think if the "reportee" has a post count below a certain threshold, the reported post is deleted immediately, and after a few reports it gets automatically banned.

The problem is that mass-spamming can get you over that threshold before anyone can report. Alternatively, an hour of "undercover posting" is enough to avoid the instant-delete.

I think the system could be improved by simply taking into account the age of of the account (as well as post count, to prevent "sleeper accounts"). Secondly, reporting should be disabled on accounts in the "trial period". That way, more weight can be put on reports without opening up the system to abuse.
I see.

I wonder if there's a viable age vs post algorithm that can be used to determine whether or not posts should be automatically deleted.

Obviously, there'd be a wedge of accounts that are genuine that don't post often that run the risk of having their posts removed, but I'd imagine that this would happen in few circumstances.

An alternative is to grant the authority to certain regular posters on the forums.

You can test your newly gained report skills an the post above (->abijahmelvin) :)
@iHutch105: I've always been opposed to appointing official moderators on fora. I've been a moderator in several communities and I can guarantee that it drives a wedge between you and the rest of the community; the internet seems to bring out the "Fuck the system!" mentality in even the most mature communities.

I prefer the idea of a self-moderating community, where "power" is purely based on contribution (e.g. time + post count). It shows that everyone's opinion is important, it means several people must agree for something to happen and it clearly shows that "power" is earned. I find that people more quickly accept the opinion of a respected member of the community over some "arbitrarily" appointed moderator.
Boosh! Post obliterated.

@Gaminic - Fair and well articulated point.

@Coder777 - Thanks for letting me have that one. Must say, I do enjoy it.

I think that there should still be more reports possible after the first one and a certain amount of reports will remove posts for users with a certain amount of posts themselves, then people who have a ton of posts due to spamming can still have their posts removed if a ton of people report the post, and then the account could be removed after this happens a few times.
