Hey guys I was wonder how many people still use Windows 2000. I have been browsing around the internet looking at all the different games seeing what their minimum required OS is and so on. Also I have been trying to check out if I could find out the majority for hardware range. The only website that seem to provide a good amount of statistics would be steam.
but this information isn't very accurate since it only tell you the stats of the people that use steam and leaves out the people that don't. So it is nice to take it with a grain of salt. Guess what I am really looking for is if anyone knows any other places with some good stats :), and I will update the thread with any new data I find.
See here, for example: http://www.w3counter.com/globalstats.php
I recently dropped support for Windows versions prior to XP for my programs. Based on these stats, it should be a safe thing to do.
Thats a great link Athar. it is interneting to see that if you go back to just a few months ago windows XP was dead in the lead and within a few months windows 7 took over. As of right now I am working on getting stop statistics of different game hardware requirements I will post what I have when I have a decent amount of infomation. it will be upload to open sourceforge probably in a html table :P for ease of reading
Compared to Windows vista which should of been called XP 2.0. Windows 7 is a more true successor to windows XP. I could easily say the areas XP excels over 7 and vice versa but in the end Microsoft has done a good job in pushing for all people to buy windows 7 and it shows by how quick it has taken over what is the more common OS in the average consumers home.
The Windows 7 UAC is a much better solution than running constantly in elevated mode (Win XP), it's less intrusive then the one in Vista, and it's much more user friendly than sudo, gksu in Linux (password *every time? bleargh).
@Stormhawk
I'd say Windows 7 was more a Vista 2.0 than Vista was an XP 2.0.
@darkestfright,
You don't have to put the password in every time with sudo, but admittedly it is annoying having to do it every time with gksu. I don't understand why that problem even exists since AFAIK gksu is just a graphical extension of sudo...
