I don't think it's fair to call Anime as a whole FailWARE. Though I'll admit the vast majority of shows that get an official dub in any western language are basically crap.

No, it's just the dub is crap. Americanized Japanese anime often censors and cleans (as in no gore, blood, violence) up the anime for children. Dragon Ball Z was a prime example of this with the "OVER 9000" meme coming from the shitty DBZ dub. The english dub's I find are terrible since I'm pretty sure they get teens to do the voice acting so to me they all end up sounding the same with their premature voices.

I've never watched any of the "real" animes. I grew up on pokémon and DBZ, which objectively speaking were probably pretty shitty. Every time someone suggest an anime series, I try one episode and get turned off immediately by the bad voice acting(/dubs), the ridiculous overly dramatic everything and the terrible stereotyping of the characters.

The "over 9000" meme is pretty much the thing that turns me off in most animes. It's always the same buildup where some badass warrior encounters an even stronger opponent, gets his ass kicked, then returns stronger than ever. Phase one is mostly frames of gasping faces with open mouths, trembling eyes and shocked cries, while phase two is characterized by sudden inner peace shown by looking away from the opponent and looking downward with (semi-)closed eyes.

I do enjoy anime, though my biggest issue is trying to find something I like that isn't directed toward teenage boys, in a high school setting, harem of girls, fan service, etc.

Thanks for the perfect example of the "terrible stereotyping"; I couldn't find one myself. I'll give Angel's Egg a try when I need a new thing to watch, but I don't have much hopes for it. I think I just don't like the entire anime culture, especially the stereotypical fans that eat nothing but ramen and can't have a conversation without throwing in some Japenese non-words.

It may be that you won't like Angel's Egg, but for different reasons.. It's very slow, silent and enjoys its biblical references a bit too much. By the way, in case that was unclear, it's not a series, it's a 70 min film.

I can see I'll be the only one in this thread so far that actually likes the show Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo. If you haven't seen it I highley suggest that while watching it you keep in mind, yes this is how the directors wanted the show to be perceived. Also if you've never seen Shin-chan\Crayon Shin-chan then give that one a shot to, I know for a fact that one is up on netflix.

Until this thread I never thought I liked anime so much, but I guess I do. I'm definatly not in that group that Gaminic describes but I think anime is a wide enough catagory that it has a niche for everyone who enjoys cartoons.

@ sohguanh: Tintin has a HUGE cult following; I hate that it came under so much fire for the supposed "racist" content. Maybe it will make a come back after the new movie comes out.

What I was implying when I mentioned most not getting an english dub was that the good ones aren't known abroad because they haven't been broadcast on television stations in western cultures.

Also for any interested in checking out some good seinen anime (anime targeted at the male aged 18-34 demographic) here is a short list of things I recommend:

*Cowboy Bebop
*Ghost in the Shell (stand alone complex, though the original movie is amazing)
*Neon Genesis Evangelion (just skip the last 2 episodes, they ran out of funds and didn't actually end the series properly, then they made the movie "The End of Evangelion" with what was supposed to happen at the end of the series)
*FLCL (best feel good anime ever, though be prepared to have no idea what is going on for it's entire 6 episode length)
*Paranoia Agent
