first of all i'm not a computer idiot, i can build my own computer, recognize the pins and bla bla bla.
anyways. My sound suddenly stop working when i woke up today. i thought it was my headphones problem, so i test it on my ipod but it have sound.
so i thought it is my sound card's problem, but when i open the case the light was on. Ok so i try to use the default HD inboard sound. STILL isn't working. So i thought is window's problem but when i open my sound mixer and play something that "should" have sound the green bar does jump but i just can't hear anything. i have no idea what's going on.
however, lucky here are some strange things that happen during the last two days that might help.
1) sometimes my sound gone fuzzy, and i normally restart and the fuzz is gone. but the night before i didn't restart and just keep going. (maybe i over load something? i don't know...)
2) my computer keep remind me of "low disk space".
3) raining in my area. it's not heavy rain but i don't know i'll jsut spit it out anyways.
the 3 points above only happen during the last 2 days. oh i turned off my computer at night btw.
This isn't really the form for it but what the hell. You say you can build your own PC so I'm going to assume at least an intermediate knowlege of PC's. The following are all stand alone things to try one at a time in NO particular order:
- Try the on-board sound for your Mobo. If this does not work then shutdown the PC, remove the offending sound card and try the on-board again.
- Roll back any sound drivers you may have updated recently.
- Find the pin-outs for the front-side sound port on and attach them to your tower if applicable. Then try that alternative port, if this works then the issue is corrosion on the sound port.
- Move the sound card to a different PCI slot.
- This one may sound odd, but remove the sound card and sniff it. If you smell ozone (that soft not quite chemical smell after an electrical discharge) then you know the card is boned.
- Download Ubuntu on a CD\DVD and try booting to the Live disk environment. This one isn't a perfect suggestion but the drivers that come with Ubuntu probably work with 80% of the hardware out of the box. If you have sound then you can shutdown and boot back to windows because we know it's a software\driver issue.
- Check the volume. I don't mean to patronize you, we all have our off-days when the most simple things escape our notice.
- Roll back any sound drivers you may have updated recently. i can't do that because i'm using a fairly old ssd for my window, so i disable that back up function. Is there a way for me to uninstall audio driver and install it back?
Move the sound card to a different PCI slot. i only have one pci slot.
3) i tried sniffing it. nothing smells wrong, and even it was onzed i can't tell beucase it was over night.
4) i'll probably try it
5) ofcu i have my volumn on lol.
- Find the pin-outs for the front-side sound port on and attach them to your tower if applicable. Then try that alternative port, if this works then the issue is corrosion on the sound port. this one maybe, becuase the fuzzy sound i have in the past few days really sound like corrosion. i believe the sound card and the in board audio use the same sound port so that's why is not working. but the sound pin that pin to the tower is not using the same port (confirm my understanding).
In short, the easiest way is to replace my current mobo with the exact same extra mobo i have on my desk. if i still don't have sound then it's obviously software problem. am i correct?
