Will someone please tell me who I need to hate for this?

Well 80's songs are simpler and the melody nicer. I guess some would say so is 60s,70s too. Nowadays song arrangements are just too complex. So tell me your choice of musicians and let me guess your real age too :P
well my choice of musicians is really varied, so it's probably difficult to guess my age because of my music preferences. I usually just pick songs I like, and not really stick to certain genres. However, rap music is usually much more difficult for me to like of all the genres to be honest.

Some songs I like would be:

John Denver - take me home country roads, annie's song, back home again, rocky mountain high.

Sam Cooke - Stand by me

Carpenters - Top of the world, end of the world

Neil Sedaka - breaking up is hard to do, sweet sixteen, calendar girl

Cat Stevens - Morning has broken

Beatles - Let it be, I will, here, there, and everywhere, I should have known better, yesterday, eight days a week, till there was you. (Probably more can't remember all the titles at the moment)

Michael Jackson - beat it, smooth criminal, heal the world, black & white

Oasis - Stand by me, Don't look back in anger, Don't go away

Lene Marlin - Unforgivable sinner, Sitting down here (one I listen to over and over when I'm programming, it just motivates me and gets me in the zone probably because the lyrics go "I'm sitting down here but hey you can't see me, kinda invisible you don't sense my stay" which is how I feel when I'm programming lolz)

Maroon 5 - This love, She will be loved

The Corrs - at your side (unplugged version)

Teresa Teng - Moon represents my heart (taiwanese song)

BBmak - Back here

Sean Kingston - beautiful girls

Chris Brown - with you

Jay Sean - down, do you remember

Some other songs where I forgot the singers would be livin' on a prayer, losing my religion, closing time, vincent. I'm sure there are a lot more which I forgot for now. But as you can see the music I like is very varied. I really appreciate all kinds of music I mean.

Oh yeah, and christmas songs sung by Haley Westenra she has the voice of an angel. In my opinion she's the number 1 singer today by far. Her voice sounds auto-tuned and that's when she's singing live or acapella. Sadly though, I don't think a lot of people know about her. She deserves to be much more famous if you ask me. No one has as much voice control and quality as her. She even make contestants from American Idol and other singing competitions look bad.

Here's a link to her singing some christmas songs actually so you can judge for yourself. =)

Is that a joke? =P They're [mostly] all just 4 chords.

Didn't you watch those videos everyone linked?

The production quality of newer music is better, so the songs sound "fuller" and make better use of stereo, but I wouldn't translate that to the songs being more complex.
Unless he's referring to hardcore/dubsteb, and by 'complex' means 'random noise'. Which I guess would be true, as 'patternless' is by definition complex. I'd dare dispute the 'music' part though.

Thanks for the explanation. I guess I was duped by them also! I always thought newer songs are "fuller" as you say but once the songs are stripped down to the core, they ain't nothing but (mostly) simple 4 chords? Can that also explain why I hear so many "newer" sounds drowning out the lyrics? Hmmm....
