Setting up a home SSH server for mobile development

Let me preface with the knowledge that I have no idea what the hell I'm doing in setting this up. I've never used telnet or SSH before in my life, though I know what they are and do. And I've never set up a server of my own.

Now, lately I've been spending more time that I'd like to away from my desk, and my desk happens to be where my main computer is, and my main computer happens to be where I program. I have a laptop, but it is old and doesn't have much in the ways of harddrive space (approximately 20GB), I've been using dropbox but I don't like having a limit to how much I can store without paying and it's pretty difficult to share software over dropbox. (plus I have to sync things to the harddrive anyways)

As a result of this situation I'm looking to set my desktop up for use as an SSH/SFTP server. My desktop is almost always boot into windows 7 these days, so I have FreeSSHD and FreeSFTP installed. But I have no idea how to set them up or how to access them from my laptop.

After skimming through several tutorials and having no idea what I was looking at I decided it be best to look for help from some of the best computer oriented minds I know (or know through the web). So, if anyone can help me out, give me some direction in setting this up properly, I would be very appreciative.

Oh, also, I have XP on the laptop with PuTTY installed.
