3d rendering 2d tiles

Hi. I was wondering if there is a general tutorial on rendering 2d isometric tiles in a 3d renderer or if someone on this board could explain it to me. Setting up an isometric view is easy but I'm lost when it comes to properly rendering tiles. For example, should I render up close and use an image editor to shrink it to tile size? How does the perceived camera position in my game relate to the camera in the renderer?

I use Cinema 4D by the way.
