I'm not a true alcoholic, though I do like a drink from time to time. So far, I've stayed pretty creative I guess. In any case, I won't ever start drinking caffeinated drinks.
AFAIK it's not true that alcohol causes brain damage (of course, if you die of alcohol intoxication then you will probably suffer some brain damage due to lack of oxygen as well as decay) so no, I don't think that's true.
I'm a firm believer that your brain wants two things: water and B vitamins. I couldn't tell you why but make a routine of this for a week or two and you'll feel the difference.
By routine you mean drink primarily water and eat foods high in B vitamins? If so I'll give it a shot.
Also Chris, alcohol can cause brain damage if not taken in moderation. By this I mean, if you are regularly vastly intoxicated (close to or at alcohol poisoning levels) you will be causing damage to the brain due to the effect alcohol has on the platelets in your blood.
That's not to say going out and getting drunk every weekend will cause anything noticeable...
I personally don't drink alcohol, so I can't say anything about its effects on my programming ability. I do drink tea, however, and I must say that there's nothing like programming with a fresh hot cup of tea to drink. [/tea-plug]
For me it is coffee. Somehow it help you to stay awake so your brain is running for a longer period of time before you feel sleepy. Alcohol and cigarette in my country are very expensive due to the very high tariff taxes my government impose on them. And yes chewing gum is banned for sales in my country kinda ironic isn't it? :P
The so called official reason given by the government is it need to spend a lot of taxpayers monies to get cleaners to clean up those gum left behind. Apparently some of those gum cannot be easily removed unless use some special chemicals and waste a lot of man-effort and time to do it. So to save monies and make the cleaner job 'faster' like sweep floor and clear rubbish, chewing gum sales is banned. Consumption of chewing gum is allowed though, possibly you buy from overseas and bring them into the country.
Also for common toilets you use in the public, failing to flush after you finish your business is an offense that warrant a fine. How do the government implement it is questionable. Station inspectors who will hide and spot-check on users at ALL common toilets ? :P
the algorithm for the proper british way is about has hotly contested and debated as whether or not one person's invisible sky wizards exists while another's doesn't.
there have been many a thread posted on various subreddits about this.
