I mean in the 80's a talking sentient computer was scary. Especially that it holds all of the United States Nuclear Power in its hand at the verge of a war with Soviet Russia.
Now imagine fast forwarding to 2011/2012. Computers talking like Siri and Watson are now accepted (if not still scary). Robot movies have been done and done again mentioning our own negligence as humans. Then what kind of message can they bring to light with the war with Iraq. Its not going to have the same impact of a message as the first one.
Soviet Russia was a threat for many years and they had the Atomic Bomb right after us. Iraq is just getting nuclear power and was only a threat since 2000.
I'm sure they can write the movie in the Cold War Era but that might not bring in the audience they want.
Yes, but the message of the film can be simple and powerful: "Look at how computers control everything in the world now". I hope it is not set in the cold war era, but is set now in the internet age.
Wargames is on the third or fourth place in my list of most hated movies. Nothing that goes on in it makes any damn sense, starting from the fact that the best AI in history is at the same time given control of missile silos and listening for incoming Telnet connections from the outside that can cause it to launch an attack, all the way to the part where the kid gets a pat on the back and a "oh, you troublemaker" at the end, instead of spending (along with that retarded scientist) the rest of his life in prison for nearly causing WWIII. And of course, apparently someone designed that war room so that output from the computer would be completely indistinguishable from the tactical map and radar.
It's not like there's no realistic ways that computers could screw up civilization. Just think about it: the great majority (around 80%, IIRC) of stock trading is automated, some programs even take advantage of other programs' weak points; most of the banking systems in the world are based on COBOL running on mainframes that emulate decades-old hardware.
Lol, we watched that movie during my second "programming" class in highschool. (I say "programming" because it had nothing to do with programming. at all. It was 90% learning how to put together a computer)
My friends and I couldn't help but laugh at how bad it was. We also watched Hackers and the original Tron in that class.
The only movie I actually want to see remade from the era is "Wizard". I would be there at opening night.
Wasn't Wargames the one where in order to "Hack" (I am now sitting at my desk laughing at that term) into the system you had to beat the computer at Tic-Tac-Toe or something just as stupid?
