Is it normal for some component in my computer (graphics card?) to emit a high pitched humming noise when I run an SFML app or (I think) other graphics intensive application?
EDIT: I ran Blender 2.49 (which uses OpenGL AFAIK) and I couldn't hear it then.
I've heard old behemoth monitors hum like that before, but you don't strike me as the kind of person that would have one of those 200 lb monsters setting on your desk.
I did until about two years ago. Nothing like a 26 inch CRT monitor. I got 3 of them for $20 dollars a piece from a warehouse for a company that buys and refurbishes all sorts of computer components.
edit: You know, the EMF around them was so strong... if you put your head close to any of the screens you could literally feel the radiation. I was pretty sure those things were going to give me head cancer.
Edit Jr.: Xander314, I often heard that same type of sound when I clocked my Phenom II above 3.4Ghz, I never found out exactly what it was, but if I had to guess it was due to the extra voltage I was pushing to the CPU. If it's the same kind of thing happening with you GC (pushing it to the limit is causing it to run at it's full speed) Then I'd have to say it's not normal.
edit: also, my crt monitors never really hummed like that. They did make loud snapping noises every once in a while. This was followed by the image on the screen glitching and the faint but distinct smell that always accompanies the snapping of a decent voltage arc of electricity. It was shortly after this started happening that I decommissioned those beauties for good.
Hmmm. I'm beginning to regret my choice of username... I may be swapping to Zephyr or NullInfinity soon.
@Duoas Firstly, just to make clear - the CRT comment was not me. I do not have any CRT screens, let alone humming ones. I am perfectly capable of opening my case and I have a can of compressed air (my vacuum cleaner is awful). However (just to prove how responsible I am), I gently stopped each fan in turn (case 1 - 4, CPU, GPU) for a second and in no case did the humming stop.
@Luc Lieber I don't know how you tell whether a person user CRT monitors, but you guessed right :) Feel free to take one, but if many more do, I'm swapping to another account.
@xander337 It was very irresponsible of you to answer a question directed at me =P With great usernames come great responsibilities hee hee hee. No overclocking - I want to, but I'm waiting to buy a Noctua HSF and some quieter case fans first.
So, to summarise, the humming is not coming from a fan.
UPDATE:
I just reran my test SFML application with the additional line Window.SetFramerateLimit(60), which stopped the humming. I guess it was just the sound of the CPU at 100% then. Maybe that's still not normal.
So is there anything I can do? In the past, my Q9550 has regularly been between 80 and 90C, I think (when I noticed this, I took preventative measures, but there was a long period before I installed a hardware monitor). My case had very poor airflow.
The point is, the maximum allowed temperature for the CPU was 70C, so could this be the cause?
