How do screen recorders work?

Like Fraps and stuff, how do they work? ^_^

I always thought that it takes screen-shots of the selected area and places them side-by-side when you've finished recording, making a video. That could be the reason why it uses quite a bit a CPU usage (depends on the CPU, I suppose).
