From what I gathered in the YAMT, we have a lot of metal/prog fans here. Well I ask you of that group your views on the band Dream Theater. I only discovered them last year when I first met my college room mate, but I can't get enough of them! I love concept albums, I love prog, and I love songs that can go on for 15+ minutes and not get boring. Hence, I love dream theater xD... anyways, any other fans on the cplus of plus?
I love Dream Theater, especially with their newer stuff where Labrie actually sings well.
Scenes from a Memory is my favorite album of all time, Images and Words is kindof overrated, Six Degrees is my personal favorite, Octavarium slightly behind that. Haven't heard the new stuff.
80's was the time heavy-metal rules. Since they are formed in that decade, they have to jostle with Metallica,Megadeth and many others. It is not easy for a band to be taken notice since fans have just too many choices to choose from isn't it?
Octavarium is what got me hooked. I borrowed his ipod when mine was dead and I had class across campus. I listened to the self titled song, and asked him for a copy of the discography xD. I just finished listening to Systematic Chaos sequentially for the first time. I had listened to the first 2 songs a couple times. but never the full story. Also, Black coulds and silver linings is pretty damned good. The count of tuscany is a close second for my favorite song of theirs.
Six degrees is probably my favourite of their albums too. Chaos in progress is pretty fun to watch (documentary of the making of systematic chaos) so check that out if you haven't seen it, although it made me hate James a little...he's so annoying.

Me too, hence why I like Dream Theater as well (they're my favourite band)!
Of the newer DT albums, I like Systematic Chaos the best, whereas I didn't really like Octavarium and Black Clouds (although both had their moments). I can't pick a favourite album of theirs, but I can listen to all of them until the end of time (except Octavarium and Black Clouds).
Have any of you guys heard of Symphony X? They're more on the metal side and fans of DT/prog/metal tend to like them as well.
What do you think of the new album (if you've heard it yet)? Because Paradise Lost owned so much, I'm really anticipating it. Probably gonna buy it next time I get paid. Also, The Odyssey (as well as Paradise Lost) are my favorite albums by them, though come to think of it there isn't one I don't like (haven't heard the self-titled yet).
The Odyssey (album) has a 20+ minute track based on The Odyssey and Paradise Lost was only loosely based on the Paradise Lost epic poem (thank you Wikipedia). I wasn't aware that Paradise Lost was an epic poem (until now) but I knew that The Odyssey was. I just did a cursory check (thank you again Wikipedia) to see if any other epic poetry-based Symphony X albums went over my head, and it seems that it's just those two that have epic poetry-based themes :)
Well that's neat :P I had really wanted to read a bunch of the classic epics for a while but procrastinated the hell out of starting them. First year of University I took a class that explicitly forced me to read them. I regret nothing :P
