It's been quite some time since I start a new topic. Any punk rock music lovers in here? I will kick off first.
I have listened to Clash, Sex Pistols, Ramones and others. The only verdict I have is in terms of melodic punk and distinctive guitar sounds, Ramones top it all. Clash adopt too many music genres so labeling them as punk is not really correct. Sex Pistols gain more fame for their stage and off-stage antics effects, drug overdose etc than their music.
If Beatles is what UK produce and bring the world music lovers to their kness then Ramones is the equivalent from US that will bring the world music lovers to their knees although their music genres are different though.
Guttermouth is my favorite. Exploited have a couple songs that I like. I agree with you and do like the Ramones.
I used to really be into Mindless Self Indulgence.
LOL! I'm only kidding. I love the band, don't get me wrong, but many people now hate me because I have made the argument that they are indeed punk. I don't need more haters.
I've only heard a few songs, but Rancid seems like a really good punk band.
The definition of punk is pretty subjective isn't it ? I do like Green Day, their songs American Idiot, Boulevard Of Broken Dreams, Minority etc are pretty melodic. I guess the shoes of Ramones are hard to fill but in certain ways Green Day do have what it takes to fill some part of it.
Basically I like melodic guitar riffs in punk music. Same goes for heavy-metal bands. I know the term melodic is pretty subjective again so to each his own I guess.

Depends who you ask... (I thought it was funny)
To a certain extent, maybe. The definition of a genre is set, however people may say that because a band (or even just a song) is more towards one end or the other (in punk, we could say to the melodic or heavy ends) that the band (or song) is a completely different genre, or set it into a sub genre (pop/ punk for example, which many people classify Green Day as).

That (to me) is the great thing about most bands (in most genres), they can't measure up to their predecessor, but in one way or another, they bring something new to the table which leaves something to the next band/ generation to try and follow up bringing something new and exciting to most new bands.

Again the definition of metal is pretty subjective isn't it ? There are so many metal categorization like thrash, speed etc etc. I am not into Nuclear Assault or Slayer style though.
I guess I like glam or more mainstream metal? Stuff like Whitesnake,Metallica,MSG (aka Micheal Schenker Group),Rainbow,Poison,Pretty Boy Floyd,Cinderella,Bon Jovi,Def Leppard etc etc appeal to me. Guess you know I prefer more "main-stream" metal :P
