This is great, I especially like the part about "Have a utility knife, duct tape and battery-powered radio handy, along with some changes of clothes and bedding." Shouldn't the last two be at your house regardless of the current state of emergency?
He's right though, the advice about an emergency kit is pretty generic if you look at it. I would also like to add that I believe it is the civic duty of every able bodied person to learn basic First Aid. Even if you can't get out to be certified there are more then enough resources online to teach you how to bandage a wound, restore breathing, splint a limb etc. and what to do if you are the first person on the scene. It's pretty basic stuff and some of it even seems like common sense.
I remember when Left 4 Dead first came out, how so many people would start to talk about the game and the conversation would often go like this:
- THEM: "If zombies ever attack, I'm going to hold up in the Mall\Sears\Walmart etc..." then they would go on to list a dozen reasons why.
- ME: "Really? so you and a hundred other idiots not prepared for any type of disaster are all going to be fighting over the same resources? That is if the National Guard who are staitioned not even 10 miles away from there aren't already securing that area. Good Luck with that."
- THEM: "Well except for the National Guard those other people won't be a problem because I'll bring a gun!"
- ME: "You don't own a gun."
- THEM: "I'll go buy one if the zombies ever attack."
- ME: "..."
So as funny as this is, I think it's necessary in our culture.
I'd just go to a secluded area, where zombies won't be able to track me. That way if any do stumble upon me I'll have plenty of time to prepare and divert them into a pit or something. In an environment like that I won't even need a gun (although if I can find one I'll definitely hold onto it for any emergencies).
When I say secluded I mean 'countryside' or something like that. Will be quite scary though, and will have to take friends and people I trust so we can take turns guarding and watching for any zombies who find us.
We'd be hoping mankind can survive against the hoards because if they can't then one day we'll just be surrounded by countless zombies all converging on one of the few places left with fresh meat. Actually, if we could get enough people together we could all make weapons to defend ourselves, make it to the secluded spot as a base and then train waiting for that day to come, ready for the zombie onslaught.
Shame that guns are so hard to get hold of in Britain...
I'd like to point out that wiether or not you should own a firearm was never supposed to be the focus of that conversation, although it always seemed to drift in that direction, the point was that their plan for surviving any disaster is based on movies and is on a case by case knee jerk reaction. They don't take the possibility of ANYTHING happening to them seriously.
Now I'm not saying you should live your life like you're some kind of one man militia. But how hard would it be to follow the guide lines on that site? It would take maybe an hour to get that kit ready but most people will never bother doing it. Those people are the real threat in a disaster situation.
I'd just keep a mass amount of zom-b-gone at hand. The active ingredient is smooth jazz so you know it's gotta work...right? (or am I confusing 'zombies' with 'ravers' again?)
We had a thread about something like this before. We pretty much decided that, despite it making you look like an asshole, a full-body leather suit gives the greatest protection vs. restriction of motion. I seriously doubt human teeth can pierce leather, and remember, zombies have had some time to decay, so their teeth are probably not as strong as the average persons anyway. The only issues with leather is that they can stilll hurt you (you could get bruising from their bites, although they couldn't break the skin or infect you) and the heat. That's why I was thinking of chain mail. I can't remember what the response to that was in the old thread.
Doesn't matter; it isn't as heavy as what a modern soldier wears in armour and supplies (about 35 kg/75 lbs). I could probably live with it. A leather suit on the other hand would be much lighter.

When everyone in Britain is zombified, you'll wish you had the 2nd ammendment.
If you are lucky enough to survive the zombie outbreak, the criminals with illegally purchased firearms will probably get to you.
"If guns were outlawed, then only outlaws would have guns." - Mathew Brown
Lucky for me, I've got plenty of guns, so I'll at least be able to survive long enough to get somewhere safe.
There's nothing to ammend to, Britain doesn't have a constitution. It's a stupid system, really, but where the US system was planned out by the founding fathers, ours has just evolved from our monarchy.
