I just made a run for those Oreo Fudge creams and I must say they were tasty. They also have them in mint and peanut butter. I ate about 20 of them while reviewing a damned batch job for this wretched COBOL SYSTEM!!!!!
There are people who still use COBOL? I thought that language was already a thing of myths and legends.
You would be surprised just how many 10s of millions of lines of active source code are still out their, mostly in banking and insurance industries although much progress is being made. Entry level COBOL programmers make 6 figures right now because of the severe shortage, but there are only a handful of universities still teaching the language. It's not an exaggeration to say that the COBOL resources are dying off or entering retirement. I could tell you consulting horror stories about my battles to convert these ancient systems...

As long as Mainframes are not de-commissioned, suffice to say there will always be a demand fro COBOL developers especially since most of them are likely to be retired now. Getting young and new developers to take the COBOL path is not easy. That explains the high package given to those who can develop in COBOL well.
Much of the COBOL programmers are now being sourced from Asia through various consulting firms (accenture, etc...). Unfortunately that means that the abundance of outsourced resources may just continue to keep the mainframes alive for another few decades.
Should I learn COBOL just to be rich?
lol maybe. You'll have severe brain damage afterwords though. I've never a met a COBOL programmer that was able to move back into a modern language.
I think I'll take a look at it.
