:O Whoops I didn't think about it like that - it does sound a bit bad... I merely meant that if they say you can't use the lift, it doesn't mean you can't. I honestly didn't have it in mind the other way round :/
There is a difference between thinking outside the box in a puzzle-ish thing and breaking basic morals and/or the law...
Yeaaaa I'd like to apologize for that one. I've spent the last 4 hours of my life having a rather...colorful conversation with a friend on Facebook chat. The majority of the comments in that discussion were to the same effect as what I've just said. I'm sorry for that. Lost track of who I was talking to O:
That definition is bogus. Nerds are often extroverted (see: Adam Savage). You can also have someone intellectual and skilled who isn't a nerd (see: Jon Stewart)
LotR is definitely nerdy or geeky in some sense. A nerd/geek is more something of a subjective social position, rather than something that can be neatly summarized in a single sentence.
Almost forgot my point; is Lord of the Rings really that nerdy?
Depends if they just watched the movies or if they study(a tolkienologist if you will) LotR.
@Disch
ha... I forgot about that comic. I showed it to my friend and he got all defensive about how their is actually difference between geeks and nerds.
EDIT:
That definition is bogus. Nerds are often extroverted (see: Adam Savage). You can also have someone intellectual and skilled who isn't a nerd (see: Jon Stewart)
I would have thought that most "nerds" would be inverts(is "Mr.Savage" really a good example? On second thought he is pretty social...). I completely agree with the second bit about being skilled.
'Someone who loves computers' is wrong anyway. That was written in a different time, nowadays it would translate to 'Someone who is obsessed with computers' since a lot of non-nerds love computers these days, they're a lot cooler than they used to be.
But yeah, a nerd is really just an introvert intellectual in my opinion.
What about extroverts?
Well, DOS for Dummies leads us again:
"Geek
A nerd with yellow cheetoes stuck between their teeth. See nerd."
So, an extrovert intellectual must be a geek.
There we have it, definitive explanations for the meanings of 'nerd' and 'geek'.
@Disch Fair point. Earlier, as I often do, I just mindlessly quoted from Wiktionary. To be honest, I would have expected it to have a more up to date/accurate definition.
If there's one thing to make me disregard Wiktionary's advice, then it's XKCD ;)
