The case around a laptop - chassis for lack of a better word; are any made of metal? The one I'm using now I always thought was some kind of metal but now I'm not sure. Its an hp dv8000z desktop replacement model circa 2006 or so. I always thought it to be pretty sturdy, and I liked that; rigid, you know. Solid feel.
I was just wondering about it because I'm thinking of getting myself another laptop, and I like big sturdy ones. Is metal used at all? Or is it all just a plastic that looks and feels kind of like metal?
Edit:Freddie, you could take a look at Dell, they used to have a Precision Mobile Workstations that had an aluminium case (IIRC). The last time I looked they where a similar price to a MacBook Pro for a similar spec.
It's classic because it's used so much, and it's used so much because it's true. Mac's are in fact NOT worth what you pay for them. The hardware Can be purchased cheaper as a PC. This is fact. The OS isn't bad but certainly not worthy of the (at most) 3x Mark up on the hardware you need, by law, to run it. If you, or anyone, can produce legitimate evidence that Mac's do not cost more then their equivalent spec'd PC's then I will personally campaign to make mac the standard in computing for the rest of my life.
edit: Sorry for the small rant, I went WAY off topic.
Freddie, I'd suggest Asus. They have a desktop replacement that is VERY sturdy. and I'm fairly certain is all metal casing.
Here is an Lenovo laptop that's almost equivilant.
Don't make me laugh.
If you compared Desktop non mac pc, to a mac personal computer, you'd find the gap to be even greater.
Hahahaha.
Compare the 'basics' of spec like that is like comparing a BMW and Skoda by saying they both have similar capacity engines, they both have four wheels, seat five people...
Yes, I remember looking at the Dell Precision Mobile Workstations before. Just checked them out again today. Funny all the problems folks are having with them though (from reading reviews).
Ahh yes! Back in laptop shopping mode (about every five years).
I live in a Windows world and reality, so Macs are of no interest to me, even if they be made of cannon ball proof six inch steel.
I kind of hate this being in computer buying mode again. Hardware just doesn't interest me much. Don't know how much weight (no pun intended) to put to this metal thing though. This hp dv8000 (I'm pretty sure it has a magnesium alloy construction) has been a good machine for me, and I have a Dell Latitude 810 at work that has probably been the most stable computer I've ever used. I really can't recall one OS crash or BSOD in 5-6 years of use. However, I can't get that in a 17" screen.
Thanks for the Mac flame war though! It was interesting reading!:)
