To clarify, I'm not just into metal (though it makes up the bulk of what I listen to). I also have the OSTs to Halo 1, 2, 3 and ODST, Left 4 Dead 1 & 2, everything from the Orange Box (Half-Life 1 & 2, HL2 Episode 1 & 2, Portal and Team Fortress 2), several Sonic and Mario games (I can't remember off the top of my head which ones). I also really like Jonathan Coulton who wrote the song Still Alive that was at the end of Portal.
Also, though I won't pretend I listen to them much, I also like classical, whatever genre Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin fit into (swing? big band?), AC/DC, Queen, Led Zeppelin, maybe some blues and jazz, progressive rock/metal, neo-classical metal (Cacophany, for example).
I like to think I have quite broad musical tastes and that I'm fairly open-minded. Saying that, I really can't stand modern pop music or things like hip-hop, rap, R&B (these are all pretty much the same to me), "dubstep" or things like that. Again, having said that, I do appreciate some rap; people like 2pac I think were actually talented. Other genres I can't stand include anything with a "-core" prefix (excepting grindcore) and "screamo" music.
I share your feelings regarding hip-hop/rap/R&B/etc. If you're interested in hearing good rap, I recommend you listen to Diggable Planets (specificially their album: Blowout comb). They're about the only rap stand -- and I really like them.
@chrisname: 0.o... My respect for you just went up another notch. I would have killed to be at your level when I was 17.
I'm 24 my taste in music seems to be at a crossroads of sorts but as of right now my top 6 not really in order despite the appearance of ranking:
1.) Hollywood Undead. (Their new and haven't f'ed up my opinion of them yet)
2.) Godsmack
3.) Marilyn Manson
4.) Metallica
5.) Blue Oyster Cult
6.) Deep Purple
The last two are why I couldn't do just a top 5, one or the other has to be in the song queue depending on what I'm doing, who I'm hanging out with and what I'm drinking.
To be fair I don't tend to listen to much non-metal, but I know it and like it when I do hear it, and occasionally will listen to it. Most of it is influence from friends.
I've never ever been energetic, if I get much less energetic as I age I might just keel over...I'd say maybe my lack of energy actually lead to my love of cheesy metal, I've never needed soothing music to calm me down but I do need something to get me going in the morning.
Not to sound like a damn hipster but I will listen to ANY song off of 'Dookie' at any time. I don't know if it's actually good music or just all of the good memories I have with that album but it is one of those things that will cheer me up no matter what.
