Hi everyone, this is my first post on the boards - nice to meet you all.
I am considering going to get my masters in computer science after working as a business analyst for the previous three years. As an analyst I worked with a project manager in delivering custom built solutions for an accounting department.
While my undergrad is a B.S.B.A, my major was Finance, can anyone give me a good starting point to learn programming and as well, can anyone give me things to expect in the application process?
In other words, do I stand a chance of being accepted with no formal programming skills?
Are you a Business Analyst or a Business Systems Analyst? There is a difference and I'm curious to see your response :). Your looking at around 30-40 CS courses you would need to complete outside of the mathematics requirements. Finance is not exactly related to CS outside of calculus. As far as where to start learning programming, you will start with Introduction to Computer Science courses covering number systems, computation basics, data representation, etc... coupled with a language such as python... hopefully. Some schools stick you with C++ as your first language which is a mistake. You aren't necessarily supposed to learn the ins and outs of the language at first, rather how to solve problems.
The application process will depend on the university you are applying to. You are a working adult so it's unlikely you will be declined assuming you aren't applying at some top notch school. Your programming skills really have nothing to do with your application unless we are talking MIT.
Are you attempting to transition out of business analysis into pure software development? If so, why?
Return 0 - I was more of a business analyst in the sense that I communicated with the business, in my case an accounting department. I determined what functionalities the accounting team needed from a document management tool. By taking their feedback and preparing it for my project manager, we were able to work with developers to customize our platform to meet the unique and complex compliance issues that the company faced. I would like to be more in the consultant/programming role as I feel that programming knowledge allows one to have their own business upon mastery of the skill. Thank you for your reply.
Moorecm - I actually hav that meeting tomorrow, lol. Thanks for your reply.
