I am often expected to care about American football. I don't, I despise the sport that has negatively effected the lives of some many American families. I have seen so many good kids ruined by football--especially knee and shoulder injuries. But if you live in the States you are expected to watch a game this Sunday.
I won't watch it--I am going to watch the "Princess Bride" on a dvd.
Football injures kids and kills a few each year--it would be good if it went away.
Obesity also kills and injures people. We should get rid of computers and TVs because they make people fat.
Knives also kill and injur people. We should get rid of them because they're too dangerous.
Cars are one of the biggest sources of fatalities and injuries in the country. We should get rid of all of them.
etc
etc
etc
Cry me a river.
Most things that are fun have an element of danger. Even most things that aren't fun have an element of danger. The real world is just dangerous. Learn to live with it.
Spouting things like "It's dangerous and should be stopped" is just absurd and makes you sound reactionary to the point of being comical / ridiculed.
That said I'm not really a big football fan either (though I like it more than any other pro sport). I probably won't watch the game this Sunday, but mainly because I don't own a TV and don't want to go to a party/bar.
I mostly agree with Disch. Except that it knives, computers, and cars don't kill people. People kill people. None of his mentioned examples are harmful by themselves, it is only when people abuse them.
Personally, I prefer Cross Country over anything else. I don't have anything against football, but I don't really like it either.
Only because it's more popular. If you look at percentages you'll probably see a different story.
I'd look but I'm at work and am too lazy.
EDIT: And think about boxing for a minute. It's two guys punching each other until one of them passes out.
If you consider being knocked out by repetitive blunt force an injury (I sure would), that means that ideally boxing has a 50% injury rate. In reality it's probably higher than that because the winner usually walks out with injuries of his own.
/EDIT
, or wrestling.
Westling is a choreographed performance, not a competitive sport.

Well I was trying to point out the absurdity. I don't really think cars, etc kill people.
Although I think the "people kill people" bit is an oversimpliciation. The fact of the matter is some things are more dangerous than others. Cars in particular are very dangerous -- now does that mean they kill people? I guess it's subjective.
Obviously you don't have an interest in the martial arts--but nobody considers professional wrestling--wrestling. Submission wrestling, free-style, and greco-roman are real sports.

You're right. I think it's outdated and barbaric. But if people want to do it, power to them. I'm certainly not going to say they shouldn't do it because it's too dangerous.
nobody considers professional wrestling--wrestling
You'd be surprised. Lots of people think it's real, even. Then again pro wrestling fans don't have a reputation for being the brightest folk.
Submission wrestling, free-style, and greco-roman are real sports.
barbaric is a bit much -sports like judo prohibit truly dangerous holds. I am not talking about MMA garbage I am talking about legitimate sport--something you can compete in.
Spectator sporting events do degenerate into barbaric shows--go to a judo or free-style wrestling tournament you will see real athletes competing and I am sure you won't call it barbaric. But then again you will not see these sporting events on television--at least I have never seen them.
I really don't watch TV anymore either ever since they went digital in the US--I was to lazy to get a new antenna.
I like football (soccer, for americans) a lot, and I watch boxing whenever it's on (which is very rarely). I don't think anyone would consider football particularly dangerous but boxing is indeed dangerous. I think it's a noble sport, but even if it wasn't, if people want to do it, it's their problem. I'm firmly on the side of individual liberty.
There is a big difference between professional boxing and the sport of boxing. professional boxing is a spectator sport it exist only for entertainment value.
Boxing as a sport is different--the equipment is meant to protect--the gloves are heavier, headgear is worn. Also the rounds are shorter and there are less of them. The reason boxers are hurt so badly is because they are forced to fight multiple rounds eventually becoming so tired that they no longer can protect themselves adequately and they don't wear headgear.
Nothing is probably as dangerous as 200 plus pound man throwing a wrapped and gloved hand at an unprotected head. Professional boxing should be stopped or they should do what is done in the amateurs.
I stand by my original statement --spectator sporting events do degenerate into barbaric shows. Sports are something to do--not watch. You'll see grown men playing soccer on the weekends in the states for fun-- you will never see grown men playing full contact football for fun.
The reason boxers are hurt so badly is because they are forced to fight multiple rounds eventually becoming so tired that they no longer can protect themselves adequately and they don't wear headgear.
They are not forced to do anything. They don't have to be boxers. It's a choice they make. This is why I think the government has no right to interfere. They can't harm anyone but themselves by boxing, so it should be their personal business whether they fight or not, not the government's.
IMO Ice hockey is the best sport. I saw the NY Rangers play at Madison Square Garden in October; it was awesome. Field hockey, on the other hand, sucks. Sorry, Holland, but it's true.
it is true that all sports have there dangers but that shouldnt keep someone from doing it if they really love it. i race motocross ind i have broken a few bones and twisted my ankles busted my knees and lots pf other stuff. i still race and i still love doingg it.
@chwsks: I really don't know anything about the circumstances of boxing today (but I'm sure they're not the same in every country), but that's beside the point, IMO. Would you suggest banning football from England because football clubs are (or might be) being used to do money laundry? And does control by organized crime mean people are forced to become athletes? Even if it did, does that mean there's something fundamentally wrong with the activity of boxing as far as the society is concerned?
First of all I love boxing--have boxed--and would not suggest banning it. Most people do not make a distinction between professional sports and the amateurs--but there is a big difference.
Even at my age I would consider getting in a ring--but because there is no money involved I would throw in the towel when I am hurt. It would not be the end of my boxing--just that match.
Do you really think a fighter can work again if he throws in the towel -- with all the gambling money involved?
Now for organized crime--you will not get fights if you or your promoter is not paying for them. This does not mean all fights are fixed but it does mean that when hear about these purses that the pros get you have to understand they will see only a very small percentage if any of the money.
Think I am exaggerating google some of the great fighters you remember who have been retired more than 10 years--it is very sad. Pro boxers destroy their bodies hoping for the money that only organized crime ever sees. Boxing is not the same as other pro sports. It is not different in other countries.
Also people who have never been taught to thow a shot do not understand how dangerous a shot is. We wrap our hands, then cover them with a glove. The glove and wraps are to protect the bones in our hand--without this protection fighters would throw few or any shots. People think gloves are to protect your opponent--that is bull. I can hit a man multiple times with full force with a protected hand--without maybe once.
I had to remove my heavy bag from my basement because I was damaging the foundation of my house--I'm not a former pro I don't hit as hard as they do.
