Community Ban Option

I read this forum about three times a day--even though I rarely post. I have only seen "spoon licker" once. His/her post are removed quite quickly.

I like the way this forum operates; I have been to other forums with heavy handed "mods"--it is horrible. "mods" are often too personally invested in the forum--cliques form and personal battles are fought in the forum. In this forum these petty problems almost don't exists.

I wouldn't have a problem with the ignore button.

What I do find bothersome is so many of the long-term members of this forum cannot seem to ignore trolls. In one sense those that can't ignore "spoon licker" created him/her.

Of course I am a bit of a hypocrite because because I know that mentioning "spoon lickers" name is not ignoring it and could bring him/her back.

I would just like to reiterate this is a great forum--twicker does a great job. I also appreciate no pictures (I am so tired of face palms) and no avatars.
Only once?

And once in a while some spam bots appear in the forum.

We are not talking about giving too much power to some members, just to let them handle such trolls/spammers more rapidly that the admins could do.

Quoting twicker's posts on this:
I sure would be happy if we come up with some way to delegate moderation to the forum community. It's not that I don't like doing it myself, but sure I have some time constraints, and it's true that some times it can take hours before I can react.

I was thinking on a simpler solution that would let "trusted" users (those currently having "Report abuse" buttons) be able to delete posts of recent users directly (in a reversible way), and putting its author into some sort of quarantine.

Most of the time these forums are really not *that* problematic, and you guys do a great job keeping it that way with your superb behavior (even towards the rudest users) and your fast abuse reports!
It takes just 2 seconds to automatically remove all the posts made by a troll (still, 2 seconds wasted)...

Keep in mind that trolls are not to be fed - at all!... think of their posts as temporary posts. Once they are reported, they will end up deleted at some point, so whatever is replied to them is what needs to be cleaned manually afterwards.

Anyway, it is clear that some community ban option would decrease that temporary damage trolls cause - I will be working on it the next few days. I think a simple hide+ban option, with some of the restrictions you suggested, will do the trick. I will let you know when the feature is live so we can begin testing it.

@Bazzy

clarification: I have seen more than one post; but I have only been on the site once while this troll was active; and in that time they made 30 or 40 some post in less than an hour--but when I woke up in the morning it was all gone. There was although two days of people talking about this troll.

I assume your point is the "mods" are coming no matter what my opinion is--I am sure you are right. I hope the mods do not change this forum to much--I guarantee they will change it.

I would point out, xoreaxeab would have been gone so quickly with mods that I would probably never have read the treads he was active in. I loved the controversy he caused and learned from both him and those that responded to him. It is hard for a mod to use the same restraint that our administrator has used.
While some of xorebxebx's posts ended up being rather instructive, his attitude was rather annoying and childish. The fact that you can substitute 10 lines of C++ with a one liner in a higher level language should be quite obvious and not a matter of interest in a C++ forum. If people come here, they've most likely already chosen to use C++ for some reason.

Moderators are already hear, anyone that can see the report button is a moderator. I'm fairly sure twicker dose not read every post on the board but rather waits for us to say what is unacceptable.

I am sure you are right. I hope the mods do not change this forum to much--I guarantee they will change it.

If 'they' didn't change it there would be no reason to have 'them'. I believe that the people that are likely to be involved in moderation also like the way that the forum is and want to keep it that way, without the nut jobs that post hundreds of crap posts in under an hour. So in the grand scheme of things I don't see anything changing other that the speed of dealing with the things we already moderate.
@Bazzy: You missed at least one variation of spoonlicker:

Don't forget his other aliases:
http://www.cplusplus.com/member/helpme
http://www.cplusplus.com/member/helpmeagain
http://www.cplusplus.com/member/helpmeagainANDagain
And this might have been spoonlicker also:

Yes, and the hours or so it takes twicker to respond are very important. Spoonlicker has shown how much destruction she can cause in that time.
