This, unfortunately, I think is the straw that breaks the camel's back. While spoon licker was verbose and it did make it hard to focus on helping others, this is an actual DOS. I'll be a little bit surprised if nothing major will happen as a result of this.
Oh, I hope twicker has means of deleting many threads at one time... @.@
Well... the attempted DOS seems to have stopped, so I guess... he's gone for now? As long as he's gone, we could try to move on and ignore the excessive postings while petitioning for some small change to stop something like this from happening again.
It takes just 2 seconds to automatically remove all the posts made by a troll (still, 2 seconds wasted)...
Keep in mind that trolls are not to be fed - at all!... think of their posts as temporary posts. Once they are reported, they will end up deleted at some point, so whatever is replied to them is what needs to be cleaned manually afterwards.
Anyway, it is clear that some community ban option would decrease that temporary damage trolls cause - I will be working on it the next few days. I think a simple hide+ban option, with some of the restrictions you suggested, will do the trick. I will let you know when the feature is live so we can begin testing it.
Since We're going to do this we should decide what constitutes a "banable" offense. Things such as excessive profanity and death threats don't deserve more than one strong warning. I think we should use it sparingly for anything else. Homework posters shouldn't be banned because they are usually willing to do something once we deny them help.

First of all, profanity of any sort has no place on the forum. It only serves to discredit the poster and I assure you no one is impressed. Second, "death threats" are ok? Give me a break;
Death threats are a pretty serious offense, in my opinion. Profanity... eh. Repeated use is definitely no good, but should someone be banned for repeated profaning before getting a formal warning or two?
I threatened to dismember spoon licker a couple of times over the past few months... good harmless fun :). No one should take death threats seriously anyway unless you have your address, name, etc... up on your profile. Profanities aren't an issue unless they are directed at someone. I don't think a few Holy Shits warrant banning or a warning.
IMHO this community ban is not to solve such things as they can be handled by the admins and reporting:
if someone says "F*** you", and that post is deleted after few hours is not an issue.
A problem is when we get a hardcore troll which keeps spamming as happened yesterday.
This, even if temporary, render the forum unusable and may interfere with new user which come here and see mostly troll posts.
