Yeah, well at least we can force them to have to do something (make a new account) rather than spam new threads or something. You're right that it probably won't stop most people, but I still think it would be better that way. Maybe we could require users have unique emails to sign up (if that isn't already done, I don't remember how the sign up works XD)
I really don't mind the occasional drive-by troll, but persistent ones like spoon licker end up clogging the forum by opening many useless threads and it takes a while before the moderator gets around to ban them.
I say what we do is not only have a community ban option, but a cloud computing based function that spams all the ports on their Modem as well. Kind of like a DDoS attack but where the Website crashes the user.
He's already been doing it from what I understand.
If you have an IP address that's dynamic it's a simple as running a little command, if it's static it's as simple as getting into you're router/modems config and updating the IP address.
I really disagree--I think the trolls that visit this site are being handled quite well. Also I really appreciate the fact that clever trolls are sometimes tolerated. xorebxebx was tolerated for at least a week or two and some of his treads were very interesting to read. The only thing that I wish is that we would stop mentioning the names of the not so clever trolls--those guys feed off of attention.
My suggestion is if someone is an idiot (a troll without any talent to be clever) we refrain from using their name.
There's a problem though, chwsks. However much I'd like to just ignore the spamming trolls, they cause a DoS for the more legitimate users. While the trolls that visit here are usually banned within hours, that's still several hours in which it becomes a bit more difficult for us to help others, and as someone here mentioned (I forget who, but kudos), twicker can't be the quiet forum admin 24/7.
They're easy to ignore for some, yes. However, they usually generate a large number of threads in way too small a time to be reasonable, and it gets a bit tricky to sort through them at times. Although, I admit, it's possible.
In addition, what about the newer users here who might get the impression that cplusplus.com is just another 4chan/b/ from seeing just one user? *shudders*
But on a more serious note, we do need something more to discourage spoons. Just look at how many posts spoonlicker/western/helpme/helpmeagain/helpmeagainANDagain/Spoon Licker got on this site, not even considering the ones that got deleted.
Six accounts for one troll is terrible. It's like they're unstoppable.
@Albatross
I really do not care I just fear making changes...I really like this site. I might not post often, but I read a few threads everyday, and this is by far the best C++ site forum. I expect this will pass.
@chwsks
You know, between us, I really like the cleanliness and simplicity of this forum as well. That was one of the reasons I stayed here, aside from the community. However, if we need to make a change and it seems like a change is beginning to look like a good idea, so be it as long as this forum doesn't lose its charm.
I'm going to repeat what a few others are saying here... STOP RESPONDING TO THEM!
There's a spoon Licker thread in the beginners forum right now with 31 replies so far. This is giving the troll exactly what he/she is seeking (attention). Let the threads pass with ZERO replies.
