How the hell do you mathematically calculate algorithms? In the past, we've always used logarithm charts for reference and today we just use the calculator. But how does a calculator do it? I asked a math teacher and he had no clue and I asked the #math channel on Freenode where someone stated that I'm an idiot and "processors now adays just store logarithm charts directly in the processor". So how does one go about calculating a logarithm?

I've had similar responses to, frankly enough, similar questions. These are usually the people that don't have a clue and give their non-technical / non-practical view of a non-existent solution; in this context, how would the charts be directly in a processor?
Sadly, I don't know the answer myself, but rocketboy seems to know more about it.
