Hey guys, today is my phd defence day (the defence is in less than 3 hours). Part of what I am defending I found with a C++ program, and I learned C++ more or less by visiting this forum and asking questions :)
So, thanks for all the helpful hints you guys gave me :)
Hi guys,
Thanks a lot for all the wishes! All went cool and smooth - once I get all the remaining signatures in place, I will get the title :)
My phd is in algebra, more precisely Lie algebras, more precisely Representation theory.
There were no computer scientists (or people who did serious programming) in the room however, so everything I said about my computer work was talking in the wind :)
@Dr. tition: Maybe your talk of your computer work piqued an interest in them to learn more about it, which I think is always useful! +1,000 respect by the way, anyone gaining knowledge, especially to that degree, is awesome. I hope to someday get a Ph.D in something, sadly I never hear of people "wanting" to achieve that around where I live, they just want to get the minimum and make money it seems, eh.
tition was the nickname my high school friends gave me as a bad joke :) (it was supposed to be "tician" as the end of mathematician, but they changed the spelling to make fun of me :)
anyways the name stuck.
@getting a phd: Sergey Brin never got a phd. Nor did Linus Torvalds. So, it really depends on the area: if you want it to be computers, perhaps an academic career is not that much more interesting than "hacking it out in the real world".
@ Grey Wolf:
BS stands for "Bull Sh**".
MS stands for "More Sh**".
PHD stands for "Piled Higher and Deeper".
