(this post is directed at xorebxebx even though I speak to him in the 3rd person)

xorebxebx may be one of the more experienced, educated, and knowledgable programmers on the board. Yet nobody likes him and we all peg him as a troll.

But is he a troll?

Personally I don't think he's trying to troll (or at least he wasn't at one time, but maybe now he is?) I just think he's someone who lacks social skills. Which is especially strange because is an online forum and online social skills are typically pretty easy.

He has the classic "holier than thou" attitude where, even when his opinions are valid and have factual backing, he phrases them in a way which is demeaning and/or insulting to everyone else, so nobody wants to listen to him.

Here is a recent example:
http://www.cplusplus.com/forum/lounge/28380/page3.html#msg153680

Instead of saying "the lexer accessing the symbol table is a bad idea because <XXX>, <YYY>", he instead belittles Albatross with a reply that is indistinguishable from a troll's "flame everything" response.

He even replied again with another, similar trollish response:
http://www.cplusplus.com/forum/lounge/28380/page3.html#msg153723

And when questions of his trollish behavior were raised, he countered with an "I'm better than you" blanket response:
http://www.cplusplus.com/forum/lounge/28380/page3.html#msg153727

It wasn't until 3 posts later when he finally gave an explanation for his original logic. Honestly I agree with him on this point. I even think Albatross might agree with him. So he wasn't really trolling. He was just expressing his opinion in a way which would guarantee it wouldn't be received well.

Another contributing factor is that he redirects the poor reception to his posts to a false motive that serves his own goals. It's a vicious circle:

- he doesn't like C++
- he posts "C++ sucks" threads on a C++ forum, with a generally assholish demeaner
- people see he's being a jerk, so nobody likes him
- he sees that nobody likes him, but doesn't recognize it's due to the way he's acting. Instead he attributes it to us being "fanboys" or "a C++ church".
- he then doesn't take us seriously, and deteriorates his attitude even further

This also could be trollish behavior... or it also could be because he has no social skills.

So which is it? Thoughts?
I have my doubts about his education, but I also have my doubts about his troll status. I might call him one, however he might at times have valid points. It mostly depends on the topic. In that particular topic you referenced, I do not agree with him, however when he says that C++ is a hard language it's true depending on your wits (although I also questioned why, see included links, see that post and following 2).

http://cplusplus.com/forum/lounge/28407/page2.html#msg153306

Although I did ask him several times to give direct links to his sources. So far, no such luck as far as far I can see.

...all in all I have no opinion except that he isn't doing much good for this forum.

P.S.- He was flaming helios, not me. Just saying.

Hard to believe, that there could be someone who nerds think has no social skills.
He could be socially inept, but like you said; this is the Internet. I'm no master of social occasions myself, yet I still manage to participate in a mostly reasonable manner...
All arguments offered, valid or not, were easily obtainable via Google. I haven't read anything that seemed to carry an idea deeper than the text itself.
I think we all get a little abrasive sometimes. I know I've been more of a jerk than I meant to be on more than one occasion.

I don't know... part of me thinks I'm being too hard on him. But if he really is just trolling, then I'm not.

It's hard to tell!!!

Actually, he reminds me a bit of the C++ FQA guy. At times quite retarded, sometimes has a good point, mostly just seems to want to simply disrupt and divert. I can't help but wonder.

-And DON'T call me "Albie"!!!

We must have different definitions of the word, because you seem very level-headed and reasonable whenever I see your posts.

1. No trolling in this post.
2. Nobody likes me here. I know. I don't care.
3. Thanks for the psychoanalysis, Disch.
4. In the thread about creating languages I was not the first person who started trolling. I raised doubt that using ">" can be possibly problematic and must be taken care of. It was NOT an offence to anyone. Who started laughing at me for that, makimg me enter into the "troll mode"?

It's simple, really.

Either you suck it up, stop acting like an asshole, and stick around.

Or, you GTFO of here.

Ever saw a troll with social skills?
1. Trolling is a term that's open to interpretation. For me trolling is standing in front of a bridge and demanding 5- I mean 3 questions to be answered before allowing anyone to cross. Just kidding.
2. That's dangerous, not caring. You might find that it's harder to get stuff done around here.
3. I'd say you're welcome in an equally sarcastic tone (is that sarcasm?), but I'm not Disch. Why did you have you comment about that?
4. Chrisname would be the first person who reacted negatively to any posts by you in that thread. I seconded him and later requested that you demonstrate a degree of intelligence that would not have to insult after you pressed the matter of < and > (because to most of us and in theory to someone with your alleged intelligence, it's fairly obvious). After you did not comply with this request (even phrasing the post just above the post I will be referencing as a question or any of your posts exclusively as questions or in terms that express certain uncertainty on your part would've allowed you to avoid any perceived mistreatment), the only possibly offensive part of a post I made after that was:
Tsk tsk. *drinks CommonTrollBGone*
...and I later demanded that you give an example of your language in a way I intended to be humorous and lighthearted; it's a pity you didn't take the joke. I feel no need to go any further because at about that time most people would say you started flaming. Admittedly, I also got a bit irritated by your negative reactions, however I would not say anyone started laughing at you before you started trolling.
5. Your emotions are your responsibility. Just sayin'.
6. There's no point attacking me, chrisname, helios, or anyone else here.

@Albatross,
1. What is your name?
2. What is your favourite colour?
3. Solve: http://th.physik.uni-frankfurt.de/~hossi/Bilder/BR/efe2.jpg
@chrisname
1. My name as far as you should know is Albatross.
2. Black.
3. What do each of the variables mean? What do you mean, an African or a European swallow?

Huh? I don't know that!
Why don't we ask a quick question, which I'm sure has been asked before but I've never seen an answer to:

xorebxebx, if you don't like C++ then why are you sticking around here? This isn't to be interpreted as simply an argumentative statement, I really do wonder why you stick around here.

This might only be a related question/answer, but...

I wonder this also.

If he doesn't like C++ (which this is a C++ forum)
And he doesn't like the users
And the users don't necessarily like him

What motivation is there to stay? Other than to troll?
Maybe to brag about how he thinks he found something that he considers to be better than C++, and want's to get people on his side because he thinks that his way is the better way. Kinda' like the whole religion thing.
I think the best approach is simply to ignore him until he either leaves the forum or changes his ways.
If he leaves, then he is/was a troll. If he changes his ways, then he isn't/wasn't a troll.

I'm betting on the former.
