"Outdated Coding/Programming"

Pages: 12
I don't know what it is.. am I getting far behind? I keep running around looking for good books to learn C/C++ PHP/HTML Flash 2.0/3.0 and then I get laughed at by many people stating "Pfft thats so high school level coding! it';s out of date man!" yet they never tell me exactly what is the "New C++ C# PHP/HTML" of today??? So I feel pretty ridiculed and stupid. Can someone help me out on what they may mean? to my knowledge.. C++ is still widely used.

and what is CSS? isn't that a form of C#? xO

Thanks for any information you can provide.
They sound like idiots. CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) is used in web design along with HTML to define the presentation layer of the site and has nothing to do with C#.

Example of CSS:

<html>
<head>
<!--Star of CSS-->
<style type="text/css">
body
{
background-color:#b0c4de;
}
</style>
<!--End of CSS-->
</head>

<body>

<h1>My CSS web page!</h1>

</body>
</html>

C++ has not changed since 2003 so any book released after is fine. Only script kiddies say "Pfft that's so high school level coding"... just ignore them. A quick search on google or visit to w3c.org spec page will provide details on the latest web technologies. What in particular do they is all the rage right now?? Please don't tell me java...

"Come on man! Get with the group! Java is the next big thing!"

In reality, any language you use is fine. But eventually, languages like Pascal _DO_ get old fashioned. But even languages like Basic (or C, or C++, or a million others) are still used today despite being used for decades (mainly through derivatives though).

Who uses a real today anways.

Agreed. Nobody does... Even with the gdb 7.1 released, most of us are still stuck with an older version because
1) the customer does not care what debugging tool we use and doesnt intend to bear the cost of moving
2) the devvelopers ar fine with the old verison and any recent version is good enough depending upon the user... a very experienced person in my team proved the bug to not to be a software bug at all using just gdb and analysing process registers to say that software is not responsible for the missed copy of registers, and the customer should perhaps revamp the air conditioning to cool down the systems and himself.

It's true. Just look at Lisp, Fortran, or COBOL, although COBOL is an exception in that practically (new compilers are still being written, so I assume new code is also being written) no new projects are being started. All three among the oldest high level languages. While today they're rarely for general purpose programming, they each found a niche from which they're unlikely to be completely removed any time soon: Lisp in AI and computer science research (although Haskell is starting to slowly displace it), Fortran in engineering and scientific computing, and COBOL in business applications. Likewise, C and C++ have their place in kernel development and high performance streaming applications, including audio and video processing and games. Oh, most compilers are also written in one or the other.
Thank you. I thought that as well.. that these were just idiots who wanted to sound better than me. I'm trying to learn C++ and everything else right now to create some small games to hopefully get out there.. (not going so well.. need better learner beginners books)..

But.. It just got on my nerves when i got slammed at by the 5th person in 3 months to tell me "C++ and such code is out of date and your stupid for using it"

"C++ and such code is out of date and your stupid for using it"

Reply "Why do you say so? What is your knowledge of C++?"

Are they java programmers?

Or, should I say - Do they think they are java programmers?
A good programmer would be well rounded and not fluent in any one language, but fluent in learning a programming language. Anyone who tells you a language is outdated, or one is better than another is not a well trained and well minded programmer. Remember that.
Those people are just idiots trying to sound smart. I bet if they tried to learn C++ they'd be way out of their depth and probably just give up, saying "I don't need to learn C++, it's out of date. Now to pointlessly and prematurely micro-optimize my JIT compiled programs..."
Those people are just idiots trying to sound smart.

There is literally an endless number of these people you will encounter in your lifetime. Not just related to programming but to everything. Listen critically and stay sharp. ;)

Thanks a ton for that web address.

I believe this. Actually I am attempting to learn most, if not all languages out there. Currently starting with C, C++, Flash 2.0 and 3.0 and some HTML ... Not much but I think it's a start :-)

I ask them that actually, In fact I even go so far as to ask them what would be the best book to pick up to learn whatever they think is more modern... They don't answer, just repeat how C++ is outdated and i'm stupid. One kid just told me to go Learn Computer science.... I didn't know whether to facepalm myself.. or laugh hysterically enough that i'd need to go to the hospital for a catscan.
laugh hysterically

This usually works well, especially if you have some friends to do it with.

Note, Flash is the software. ActionScript is the language.
Learning all languages would be damn near impossible, but learning every paradigm may be reasonable if you start young xD Just keep at your dreams and keep developing software. You're gonna go far kid. (sorry for the presumption that you are a kid :P)
To return: LOL Sorry, Actionscript. Thanks for correcting me.

Actually, I like being called a "kid." .. Does that make me sound like a pedo? lol. Anyways, I just turned 22 July 20. The reason why I like being called a "Kid" is because I do still have much to learn. I am a sponge taking up everything. Mechanical.. Computer.. Carpentry.. Land Scaping.. Irrigation.. Cement Forms.. Welding... uhh.. heh.. yeah.. You name it I probably know it. I can even do architectural Blue print-outs, Satellite link layouts, Draw, Sculpt, 3D Modeling.. in Maya, using Illustrator and Paintshop, then of course Programming in a couple languages.. so far I just know how to break code apart and remold it though.. Not really code it myself.. Blah.

Oh yeah.. I can even help build sky scrapers (literally I have experience in everything listed.... many who know me think of me as a genius... I don't see myself as one though :-\)

But.. Programming.. and Technology.. I want to learn most about! I believe with Technology.. we can remedy the human urge to kill.. and hate.. Right now I'm working on a new invention for an add-on to the electric engine that will recycle the energy out put.. people keep calling me crazy lol.. but it actually makes completed circles. when i raise $500 I will be able to build a prototype that will run continuously for 3 months, then when all the bugs are filed out, I will find a way to get $15,000 to build the real thing.. I have more important long-term goals for this protect though, far beyond just a car. I can't explain those here though xD

I overall want to start up my own game-company, and I am aiming for it with a simple board game to get my name out there.. and 3 programs in complete game-doc form just waiting to be coded and skinned to look pretty. I know learning all languages is probably improbable.. But I know learning Most languages is very probable, and that is what I am aiming for. I want to find the flaw in everything known to man.. and find a way around it. The more "impossible" it is assumed to be.. The more I want to crack it.

(Personal Fantasy.. I want to learn to fly with my own energy.. I believe I am able to create little spurts of "psi" or "chi" energy, so I think if i'm able to grasp this.. the key might not be far. Oh, one more thing... People reading his might think I'm pretty fat.. actually i'm very energetic, girls love me, and I'm actually really athletic xD.. Oh.. and I learned how to communicate with the 3 "separate" entities of my own body. We all have them, the brain (you), the Body (what you use), and the skin (what protects you). I found by communicating with urself... you are able to do things... beyond normal human capability of your own size and nature.)

haha end rant.. I just had a lot to say.. guess I'm in a really good mood right now, I normally don't rant so much. Forgive me. :-)

I'm afraid it is impossible... You're just thinking of the mainstream languages... but the list is huge...take a look: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_programming_languages granted some of these are dead.

You sound like you have a lot of energy, which is great. Just try to channel it in the right directions... running around telling people some of the things you've posted might make you sound nuts and ruin your credibility. It's good to be interested in everything, not only does it make you a well rounded person, you'll find in game programming practically everything you know about life can be utilized.

Why, it looks like we have a young John "Superman" von Neumann in our hands, here! Any other utterly unbelievable and/or impossible things you'd like to share with us in bold text? Any The Most Awesome Human Being Ever Award you've won or a continent you've discovered?
Only the one where I just talk too much ;).

Credibility? Actually, As of right now.. I don't think I'm very credible for anything other than those who know me and know what I can do :-).

So I am looking to get credibility.

Actually, I do have a lot of energy but I'm looking for the path of a game Creator, Not even a programmer, Though I think the skill is crucial. All these "skills" I possess I learned solely for creativity and imagination to help in my ideas and creations x) Though I have the experience, I am in no way an expert in any of them!

"Superman hRm" xD Wouldn't that be nice :-). Actually, I think I'm more related to flash >.> lol.

Smart, Energetic, loves chili dogs because Sonic is awesome.

Btw, Thanks for the spunky responses xD
