Who the fuck throws their computer in a freezer for one. Even awhile back, the BIOS would have prevented most permanent damage effects to her computer after the computer reached a certain temperature by shutting it down. And if it was smoking, why didn't she remove the battery or something?

That story is Grade A bologna.
I used to put my old Dell in the freezer after its heat-sinks and fans became hopelessly clogged with cat hair. Everyone does, and everyone knows that a little bit of moisture does wonders for cat hair problems.

[/sarcasm]

That story does look a lot like the cow **** that tainted spinach a few years ago.

@computerquip,
The CPU/GPU is responsible for freezing; the BIOS can't run in protected mode because the interrupt vectors are overwritten by the operating system (or bootloader, in the case of GRUB) when it switches mode. Processors contain a temperature sensor which increases resistance when the temperature goes to high, the effect of which is to lower the voltage and amperage across the processor. If the temperature still gets too high, then the CPU switches itself off. I assume that's how it works, anyway. Maybe they don't use thermistors.

The point is that CPUs deal with cooling themselves down, not the BIOS.
This was excellent timing on the part of Albatross, I was just wondering what the mind set of this forum was as far as distributing potentially harmful information. I know that the simple answer is that "it's bad, mmmk" and "don't do it, 'cause it's bad" but at the same time, like others have pointed out, the people who come here and ask these questions aren't a threat to me. It's like when I hang out with my freinds and a group of younger kids ask to fire our paintball markers. Sure they could have got themselves and me in some trouble but the risk was so low compared to the fun they have for such a simple thing that I even let some shoot me.

We all know to some extent that you can read someones age and education level if you were given a sample of their posts. From there we can stereotype and guess what their intentions might be, and obviously if it's to shutdown their school or change their grades then the answer is no. But what about the ones who are looking to have some semi destructive fun? Keep in mind our help on this one bad project might spawn their interest in a thousand good ones, of course the same is true for it going the other way around. I'll keep to the culture of this forum what ever it may be.

Good... Bad... I'm the guy with the gun.
