You should try some different paradigms, as stated before. Try starting with something easy, like Visual Basic, to learn the basics. Then go on with C or even C++ straightaway (both are very well possible, but if you want to get used to the other syntaxis I advice to start with C). Do some scripting in Perl, Squirrel or Lua and finally some assembly. That'll give you a big arsenal of languages to pick from in different situations.
