installing programs on ubuntu

Hello.
How can I install a program on ubuntu?
if I use 'root' , 'apt-get' etc it says that these packages are not installed.

Try sudo apt-get install packagenaem

Replace packagenaem with the name of your package.

Also, you may want to try Synaptic Package Manager.
