whether mathematicians usually abbreviate certain words is irrelevant when you're talking to non-mathematicians

It is often irrelevant when they are talking to fellow mathematicians too.

May this be one of the fuel that drives the next generation conflict?

Young man: "lol. Retard. u r just ! flex enuf. Me'n'me bros get no probs 2 understand. lol."
Wise elder: "It's not a matter of understanding, young padawan. It is not polite and if you want our attention..."
Young man: "blalabla.. lol. gfya!"

I remember my dad was trying to get me to say less "cool" (I'm german, but we say the english "cool" a lot) but use proper versions like "Das ist schön" ("that is nice") instead, as he thought it's more polite. I haven't got a problem to use a lot of "cool" in my daily speak now, so maybe the next generation will have no problem talking/writing in "lol, u r kewl." And when they grown up, they won't think strange of someone else writes like this.

What do you think?

Ciao, Imi.
So you're a German, speaking in English who finishes all his posts with Italian? What?

Tschuss, Chris. (I can't do umlaut :( )

hm.. yea. you're right. Dunno.. just got used to the "Ciao". Never really thought about that it could mark me as an italian.. (Not that it would be bad. Just if you would see me with my white skin, you'd never ever think I am italian.. :-D)

Tschüß, Imi. :-)
