Edit: obviously it's not "open source" to the same level as Linux or BSD; I suppose it's still proprietary. But you can still read the source code. That's more than most game engines.

It seems that the entire industry is shifting to open source. Even microsoft have OSI-vetted licenses.

Huh? id has been consistently making its engines open source around 10 years after release since Wolfenstein 3D.
