Alright I'd just like to start off as usual with an explanatory preface. For starters, Video games were the original reason I got into programming. Next on the list of preface, I'd like to note that That this is just for fun. I'm a little bored and feel like writing something fun.
Now I have a working knowledge of OpenGL, as well as gAux for audio (yes I know it is deprecated) as well I am a fluent programmer and have a good understanding of physics (took the dual enrollment courses my junior and now senior year of high school to take college level physics)
All being stated I have no idea what kind of game I want to write. I'm looking for a 6-7 month project tops... Any suggestions? Again this is going to be 'in free time' or 'just for fun' project of mine ^^
hah, yea, Return 0, I've written a whole operating system. This IS a small project for me.
I've been a programmer for 8 years, so yea...lol not to sound arrogant or anything :O
edit: Typo errors and such
edit the second: Mis read your post, Yea I've completed small game projects. The only reason this will take me 6 months is because It's gonna be in my free time.
Oh, sorry about that. Hmm... well the first thing that comes to mind is to develop a simple 3d game engine. You could then script a few different games off the engine with lua or python.
Really? Can I see? Btw, it's not that I don't believe you (trust me, I know it's possible); but operating systems are my prime interest in programming* (shame I don't have anywhere near the amount of knowledge to write one... yet) and I like seeing other people's work.
Was it graphical? What arch was it written for (or was it cross-platform)? Do you have a website for it?
I started programming for games too in the "z0mg MMORPG plsplspls" thing. I started for that, then got bored of it, then returned to c++, although I don't know any programmers in real life, except for this guy at church who uses a mac and objective-C.
Sounds good :) I've written a physics simulator before so expanding it to be used with games shouldn't be too hard. Thanks :D
It would be nice to see some of your work or design!
except for this guy at church who uses a mac and objective-C.
Hmm... does that count as a programmer?
Lately my interests have switched to Game Development. I've been working on an engine for at least 7 months now and I'm way behind schedule... Some times its difficult to code at work... come home and do it again... especially when you're married!
No it wasnt graphical sadly, and it was written for the i386 architecture. It was modeled after unix slightly and I'll look for the source code*. No website up, I never intended on releasing this but I'm currently in the whitepaper stage of designing a truly AI driven OS.
* I'm sure I have the cd somewhere :\ I've moved since writing it so It may take a long time to find it, but when I do I'll upload it.
edit: @drChill, I was never z0mg MMORPG, I was more "I want to make a game for this AWESOME book i wrote..." 50 pages...craptacular plot, with grammar errors and plot holes at the ass :P
@Return 0: I recently lost most of my projects, flash drive went through the wash so my recent projects are all gone :\ Also I'm not married buuut I just got dumped because I was spending to much time coding...I disagree but what she doesnt know is part of that time was spent playing a video game with a good friend.
What, might I ask, would that be? An OS that tries to guess what you're about to do? Or an OS that attempts to be clever in it's input handling? An OS with a built in lexer, to parse commands in pure natural language?
* I'm sure I have the cd somewhere :\ I've moved since writing it so It may take a long time to find it, but when I do I'll upload it.
That would be cool. What toolchain does it compile with (GNU, MS, etc.)?
the latter of your suggestions. It's litterally voice driven I guess I should say, but it parses pure natural language as commands. Also It functions much like a chatter bot. Like i said, white paper at the moment :B It's gonna be my baby. I've wanted to make her "ErikaOS" for about 6 of th 8 years I've been a programmer. And I've finally got the knowledge I need to do it. So it's gonna take me many...many...years...
Oh and it compiles with GNU, the old one. I'm gonna look for it this weekend when I'm home all day :P
All I know about speech recognition is that you do the opposite of speech synthesis. If you can do one, you can do the other by reversing the process. My friend is great at music tech; we talk about it and programming and compare them.
a few updates: @chrisname I found the disk, it's also scratched up to hell :\ So it's not readable any longer....which really sucks cause the bi0-OS wasn't the only thing on that disk....
as for my game development...moving it up to a 3 year project. It'll be done in my free time still and will remain a pet project, but anyways...it's an RPG, story is irrelevant, the fun part will be designing and using your own spells and transmutations. it is 2D btw. anyways, the game is called Artifice, named after a magic based mythology centered around alchemy. You progress through the story by learning new equations and symbols for your spells and transmutations, eventually gaining the ability to combine them to design new ones. story is still in development and at the moment isn't important :P I don't plan on selling this game, it's just my own little fun project for my kid brothers.
