This should get a rise out of Chrisname

Lol; I don't care that much really. It's true, it makes some good points and in fact I didn't think Linux would ever get that popular. Not Linux itself, anyway. I think that the article is... mistaken; Linux has increased drastically in the amount of people using it. I've gotten about 5 people to start using it (although one of my friends is installing FreeBSD instead -- even better) alone; so imagine if all of those people start to tell their friends about it, ad infinitum...

Furthermore I don't think Linux will get or even needs to get popular. If it does, great; but really, I think that when the GNU Hurd kernel is stable and the GNU operating system is actually fully GNU (not GNU and Linux); maybe then we'll see a decline in Windows' market dominance. Not for a while though.

I try to maintain a realistic outlook... :-)

Edit: and as for "the year of the Linux desktop"; I have never believed it. Linux may well destroy Windows eventually but I really don't think it will. People are too used to it -- too many companies, schools, hospitals etc. use it. In fact; in my country at least, schools are given it for free (or, more likely, at a discounted price) because it's like advertising! Think about it; you spend 16-18 years using Windows in school you're not about to jump ship.

Another edit: I just installed the Linux Mint 8 RC; it isn't much different but I'm hoping it will run a little better. Admittedly I hate the boot screen; rather than a helpful loading bar to tell you how much of the OS is loaded and thereby help you to figure out how much is left; it has some stupid vibrance thing whereby the logo grows lighter and darker repeatedly, like it's pulsing. Frankly, I think it's absolutely ridiculous and one of the stupidest ideas anyone has ever come up with. What use is that? Really?

I just spent 15 minutes doing this:
