I am in no way connected to this shop. It seems most of you are linux using geeks, I say that with envy, so yall might enjoy some of the stuff here. http://lj.mybigcommerce.com/
Why do you say it with envy? They've made the installers so good that anyone can download and install it, and get used to it in a matter of weeks now. There are even tutorials. I tend not to rtfm (stupid, I know) and my friend was able to start using Ubuntu fairly quick. I've converted 3 people I know IRL and one I don't AFAIK, and I plan to get more.
Ubuntu is the easies distribution to use, but I like Linux Mint, which is basically Ubuntu redesigned GUI-wise, and includes more out-of-the-box capabilities.
Gamer? I got Steam installed on Wine today. I think CS and TF2 (when I get it) will work, albeit true that nvidia's windows AND Linux drivers make me want to hurt people, I used to like nvidia but the drivers, coupled with Linux's monolithic design have completely raped the Karmic beta I was using, so from now on I'm only buying AMD/ATI/WD/(Corsair/Patriot/OCZ) stuff.
AAARGH WHY CAN'T THEY GET COMPETENT PROGRAMMERS TO WRITE SOFTWARE I WANT THE 3D ACCELERATION I PAID FOR TO NOT HANG MY MACHINE INDEFINATELY. Now to find someone to complain to, and then an independant 3D graphics card manufacturer.
Its easy being a geek. Buy a red fedora (preferably with drink dispensing capabilities) and a t-shirt with tux on it, install a Unix and learn to use it (if you have your own computer; if not you're stuck until you can get one because cyber cafe's and such tend to use windows, so you best get saving) and join the club. By the way I recommend you alienate your friends and cut off your social life. Not really, I even go places when I want to...
I don't understand though. Being a geek isn't difficult if you want to. For me it wasn't a choice, someone called me it and I decided I liked it. Oh and apparently I'm a paranoid schizophrenic narcicist (bad online survey is bad) so maybe that helps.
nstall a Unix and learn to use it (if you have your own computer; if not you're stuck until you can get one because cyber cafe's and such tend to use windows, so you best get saving)
Have you heard of DSL? It boots from a usb drive and can run in bedded in windows. (did I phrase that right? Would it be possible to use unix the same way? http://www.damnsmalllinux.org
I recommend you alienate your friends and cut off your social life. Not really,
I really should learn to read all the advice b4 i follow it. Wonder if my friends will take me back.
Being a geek isn't difficult if you want to.
You are right. All it takes is:
time (have that)
dedication (dont have)
a lot of reading (hate that, TTS does not work well with system commands and programming code.)
ATM I think of my self as a power user. I know a little about a whole lot of stuff and can learn to do what I need to do. :)
You got it all wrong. Either you are a geek or you aren't. You can't become one.
The defining trait of the geek is a strong interest in one or more specific areas of knowledge, not necessarily technical. For example, there are computer geeks, literature geeks, (natural) language geeks, etc. This is the defining trait, and also the main difference from the nerd. A nerd is more like a jack of all trades. A geek is (eventually) a master of his.
The advantage geeks have over other people is that other people seek knowledge to accomplish other goals. Learning is a means for them. For geeks, learning and understanding is the end, and the knowledge just happens to have useful applications (or not). Geeks don't need motivation to learn subjects in their area of interest
Here are some others I gathered relatively recently.
Ted Nelson once said "Using DOS is like juggling with straight razors. Using a Mac is like shaving with a bowling pin."
Helios (cplusplus.com) "There's nothing like a string of nonsense in the morning to wake up all your remaining neurons, let me tell you. Coherency is boring." http://www.cplusplus.com/forum/general/11467/
"One of the main causes of the fall of the Roman Empire was that, lacking zero, they had no way to indicate successful termination of their C programs." (Robert Firth)
One of my personal favourites from, also from Helios:
Dear God, people. Is this the "Let's do things the most roundabout way possible" week and no one told me?
I don't know who I would fail with the lower grade if I was a teacher and smilodon and Kiana were my students.
You got it all wrong. Either you are a geek or you aren't. You can't become one.
Well... I know what you are saying but I disagree... anyway he could at least "emulate" a geek... Why do you think you can't "become" a geek? A certain kind of person (in America they're called "Jocks" I think) can't; but that is because they lack the... not intelligence; but more... will for more intelligence. I learn new things because I want to have as much knowledge of everything as possible, and I enjoy learning things which are interesting; hence programming. But if you're motivated to learn for the sake of learning... you can "become" a geek, as it were.
Anyone know how to open .tar.gz or .tar.bz2 without winRAR, 7zip, gzip, bzip or anything but the default windows explorer zip reading thing? I'm at school and I want to look at the source for fdisk but I can't download it >:(
By the way where can I send angry emails to nvidia? Their terrible drivers crash my system on windows or linux all the time AND I CAN'T STAND IT. I want to use compiz. I want to play games that I paid for. I want to use the 3D hardware accelerated graphics card I paid ~£90 for.
My statement was incomplete. What I meant was that that you can't become one by wanting to. Geekness is a group of personality traits, not a state of knowledge. If you do become one, it'll be spontaneous. For example, I became when I got my first computer at 12.
Now, if you want to discuss whether personality is acquired or innate, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nature_vs._nurture
I'm still undecided, but I kinda prefer the nature side, although tabula rasa would be an interesting concept.
the default windows explorer zip reading thing?
Hahaha. Good luck.
EDIT: I've never had problems with nVidia cards. Maybe you were cheap with the hardware, bought second rate brands, and this is your punishment.
From personal experience I would have to agree with Helios, mostly. I mostly agree because I have limitless faith in the human brain's infinite capacity to learn. However the brain's capability to learn is trumped by human stupidity.
I think it was Einstine that said
There are only two things that are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I am not sure about the former.
I 'became' a geek at 14; that was when I started learning C++ and realised I could learn anything I wanted to because the internet was so awesome.
Now I'm learning how much windows sucks at killing processes... I'm trying to burn a CD of Linux Mint and the stupid ISO-writing software that came with the OEM installation won't die after it's crashed. It's using 30% of the CPU on its own... this is pissing me off...
