Professional Programmers

This is more for my own benefit but will hopefully help others to, but how many of you users are professional progammers?

By all means don't post if you don't want to reveal such information but I'm interested in how long you've been programming for, what you have/are programming etc... and what degree's you have? I get the impression that a lot of people who get programming jobs have a degree in computer science but is this the only way, or just the best?

Thanks for any comments anyone gives.
Well I wouldnt consider my self to be Professional, not by a long shot. I'm off to get my degree in Computer Science in roughly a year though.

I'll tell you what I was told during my internship at a local software vendor. It's a good idea to major in computer science so that your more versatile and not narrowed to one specific section of a larger field. I found that not many colleges or universities offer specifically programming as a major.

Also back when my dad was in college getting his degree in that field, it was refered to entirely as computer science then too, this was the early 80s....

My sources college councilors, and my mentor.
Hope that helps.
Most of the more active posters are programmers by profession.

I've been programming for over 20 years and professionally for 12.

My degree is in computer science with math minor, but I know of programmers who have degrees in computer engineering, electrical engineering, etc.
Thanks for both your inputs, appreciated.
